about

An Historic is the songwriting alias of New Haven, CT based composer/accordionist/vocalist Adam Matlock, focusing on frenzied and narrative songs with elements of Balkan music, cabaret, many varieties of art-song and American soul and punk. Songs are performed live with a core of solo accordion and voice.

"The songs on Three Songs were written between 2012-14, and are just a small sample of what I've written since the material for Small Mercies. In that time, I got more anxious about the future, more pissed off at the news, and life happened pretty fiercely. I got weirder, and so did some of my songs. But also during this time I got much more confident in playing solo, and I wanted at least some of the new songs to be as close to live as possible.

So when I got the opportunity to record with Ceschi last November, it took a lot of thought as to what songs I'd want to cut that way. I settled on these three - one song trying to cope with winter, one weirdo lyric and song inspired by Stanislaw Lem's Solaris, and one narrative about trying to maintain a relationship across checkpoints and borders. I sing them all because they are the stories that occupy my life and my thoughts, and because I have to tell them."
- Adam Matlock

"The accordion is one of those magical, under-appreciated instruments that I can never imagine mastering because it's technically beyond my simple comprehension. I first took notice of Adam Matlock & his accordion around 4 years ago when we happened to perform at a New Haven punk house together. His playing is virtuosic but has the sloppy energy of some sort of gypsy punk, his voice is carefree but soulful, his songwriting is progressive but maintains a very relatable human feel. An Historic has since become one of my favorite musicians in New Haven. Last year during the same time when Adam recorded accordion for some of my projects, we ended up tracking these 3 demos of some incredible tunes he wrote. Though the craziness of 2015 prevented us from getting together to flesh them out beyond accordion & vocals, we both decided that these songs needed to be shared once and for all! So…Here you have them for Fake Four Freecember 2015. Three Songs from An Historic.
I truly hope you all check out these tracks from one of the most unique artists I've ever heard."
