Common Grackle, the collaboration between hip-hop producer Factor Chandelier and singer-songwriter Gregory Pepper, return with their first album since 2012’s underground indie-rap favorite The Great Depression. Recorded remotely during lockdown in winter 2020, Old Dog New Tricks Who This is marked by signature down-tempo electronic beats, lo-fi tape manipulations, and lyrical themes that smudge the line between dejection and facetiousness.

The album is a 20-minute reflection on the death of being cool, with both members trading late nights for family life in recent years. Pepper is at his most vulnerable, musing on chronic mood disorders, alcoholism, and a gnawing nostalgia for childhood. Meanwhile, Factor’s production is punchy and dark as ever, a sonic resurrection after his studio was destroyed in a flood earlier in the year. Consciously unvarnished and raw, these ten tracks capture a distinct moment in time where ornate confessions are underscored by lush, orchestral arrangements and pummelling 808 drums.

The 12” vinyl version of Old Dog New Tricks Who This features previously unreleased material, a newly recorded guest appearance by Ceschi and alternate versions, demos, and select updated masters from The Great Depression. Bonus tracks are also included with digital download
