about

When Ceschi graciously invited me to contribute a project I had a very different concept from "Dusty Dossiers" in mind. Those plans changed in a flash of inspiration when my friend Dope Knife approached me with a folder full of his token gritty, cinematic and jazzy beats. I instantly connected this music with material that I'd written a wealth of in a "30 poems in 30 days" contest I'd entered for a local publisher Local Gems Poetry Press, where I spent each day of National Poetry Writing Month adapting episodes of the fantastic true-crime podcast, CRIMINAL. I went back to my awarded poetry manuscript and painstakingly revised four of my favorite/more appropriate pieces to suit these instrumentals and here we have this non fiction narrative EP.

A through-line in these stories seems to be obsession and a passionate need to see something intense and hard-won come to fruition. Whether it is Jane's wild desire to "ail the sick", Adam's need to bring truth and justice to his murdered friend Angie, Stephanie's compulsion to literally unearth Sarah and Phillip Gehring to provide some closure to Terri Knight, or Hugh and Martha's excitable and impassioned addiction to solving the open case of Fred, Edwina and Charles Rogers. Researching and writing these songs became almost a meta-themed experience as all art requires and demands the same addictive, obsessive and hard-working (maybe insane) personality as many of the acts described in the stories I was working on.
Some of the scenes in this grim collection are horrible examples of human nature and yet others are shining examples of great people doing what they feel is right despite obstacles and hardship. I hope my obsessive efforts in creating this project and solving the mysteries that my muses have yet again presented me will contribute something good to you generous listeners, if anything at least entertainment.

I researched thoroughly to be sure that of these tales really happened the way I've told them, for a richer experience, seek out the podcast and listen to the episodes of the same name, and then explore the whole series if you're compelled, as I'm sure you will be! Tell the folks at Criminal who sent you, maybe they'll sanction further iterations of this endeavor!

Lastly, all of my work is a collaborative endeavor to some degree so thanks are in order: to Dope Knife for his musical landscapes, to my friend Gina Tomitz who once-again brought my film-noir photography ideas to life, the folks at Criminal were kind enough to enthusiastically grant me permission to sample the episodes that I adapted and my friend Frank Bones recorded, mixed and mastered this with his familiar humble expertise and patience. I owe a lot to Mike Phillips for lending his time and considerable graphic design skills as well in bringing the artwork and lyric booklet together. Naturally, Ceschi and Fake Four Inc. are owed a deep thanks for the opportunity to share my music on their platform.

As always, my heart and head is buried in this stuff...
...I hope you dig...
